AI Set to Become Consumers' Most Trusted Shopping Advisor by 2030

Consumer reliance on artificial intelligence for purchasing decisions has tripled over the past 18 months, with projections suggesting trust in the technology will climb 15 percentage points by 2030. According to Boston Consulting Group, AI is rapidly evolving into a primary gatekeeper for brand discovery and market influence.

The report, which surveyed 13,000 consumers across 12 global markets, reveals that 31% of shoppers now integrate AI into their purchasing journeys. For the 19% of users identified as AI loyalists, the technology is highly persuasive: 70% of these individuals ultimately purchase the products recommended to them. This shift is creating a new competitive landscape where AI-driven suggestions frequently introduce consumers to brands they had not previously considered, bypassing traditional marketing channels.

Aparna Bharadwaj, a managing director at BCG, notes that many companies are currently struggling to adapt to this new reality. As consumers feel increasingly overwhelmed by information, they are turning to AI to filter choices, leaving brands with less visibility into how they are ranked or excluded from consideration. Beyond the rise of AI, the study identifies three other critical drivers of modern consumer behavior: a shift toward prioritizing perceived value over price, a focus on health and well-being as the primary indicator of prosperity, and the expanding economic influence of single-person households. With solo living now accounting for one in three households in mature markets, this demographic remains a significant, yet largely underserved, growth opportunity for companies willing to tailor their offerings to individual needs.
