The KOALA study marks the first in-human test of HaemaLogiX’s KMCAR™ technology. Unlike standard treatments that often deplete both cancerous and protective immune cells, this immunotherapy is engineered to target the Kappa Myeloma Antigen (KMA), a receptor found exclusively on malignant plasma cells. By sparing healthy immune function, researchers hope to reduce the risk of opportunistic infections that frequently complicate traditional CAR-T regimens.
Following the successful initial infusion, which reported no serious adverse events, the trial is moving to its next stage. Clinical teams are now preparing to enroll a second patient for treatment at a higher dose level. Professor Simon Harrison, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Cellular Immunotherapy at Peter Mac, noted that the therapy represents a potential shift in managing the disease, which remains incurable and is the second-most common blood cancer worldwide. The research team will continue to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the platform as the dose-escalation process proceeds.
