AeroFarms Scales Indoor Microgreens as Retail Demand Climbs

Three months after its acquisition by Palm Ventures, indoor farming leader AeroFarms is expanding its national footprint with new microgreen varieties. The company is rolling out Micro Arugula at Whole Foods and exclusive Micro Broccoli packs at Costco, signaling a strategic push to capture health-conscious consumers wary of traditional field-grown produce.

Under the direction of CEO Gustavo Burger, the Virginia-based firm is capitalizing on a shift in consumer behavior where food safety and transparency often dictate purchasing decisions. The company’s aeroponic system, which relies on purified water rather than soil or open-field irrigation, is marketed as a solution to the contamination risks inherent in conventional agriculture. This controlled environment allows for consistent year-round production and a shelf life that stretches to three weeks, far exceeding the typical seven-day window for soil-grown alternatives.

The expansion includes a two-ounce package of Micro Arugula, priced at $4.99, now hitting shelves at Whole Foods Market nationwide. Simultaneously, the company is targeting the club-store demographic with six-ounce packs of Micro Broccoli for $7.99, currently available to Costco members in the Northeast and Texas. These products leverage the company’s proprietary growing technology, which claims to produce microgreens with significantly higher concentrations of vitamin A, calcium, and magnesium compared to their mature counterparts. With products now stocked in approximately 2,000 retail locations, including Wegmans and Harris Teeter, AeroFarms is positioning its controlled-environment model as a durable, scalable standard for the modern produce aisle.
