US Hits Russia’s VTB with New Iran-Related Sanctions

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has leveled new sanctions against Russia’s VTB Bank, accusing the country’s second-largest lender of facilitating Iranian efforts to evade international economic restrictions. The move marks a sharp escalation in Washington’s campaign to dismantle financial networks sustaining Tehran’s regional influence and military operations.

The sanctions, announced Monday, target VTB under the banner of Operation Economic Outcast. Officials allege the bank provided critical financial support to the Iranian regime, effectively acting as an enabler for the country’s sanctioned commercial activities. This designation adds a new layer of complexity to the lender's status, which has already been under heavy U.S. restrictions since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Bessent signaled the move last week, promising that the Trump administration would specifically target a major financial institution to squeeze Tehran’s economy. Since February, the U.S. has systematically dismantled Iranian access to global markets, hitting oil exports, shipping routes, and digital asset exchanges. By targeting VTB, Washington aims to close the gaps in its existing blockade, warning that any entity providing material or technological assistance to Iran will face similar isolation.
