PI Launches High-Precision Piezo Gripper for Optical Assembly

With a force resolution of 0.005N, the new P-606.1P micro-gripper from PI addresses the delicate balance between secure component retention and damage prevention in photonics manufacturing. The device combines fast piezoelectric actuation with integrated force sensing to stabilize micro-optics during high-speed automated alignment processes.

As photonics assembly moves toward total automation, manufacturers face the dual challenge of maintaining mechanical stability while handling fragile lenses and fibers. The P-606.1P utilizes a monolithic flexure design that replaces conventional bearings, effectively eliminating friction and mechanical play. This structural stiffness ensures that components remain steady during rapid scanning, settling, and active alignment cycles.

The gripper features an integrated piezoresistive sensor that provides real-time feedback on clamping forces, which can reach up to 4 N. By allowing precise monitoring, the system enables operators to securely hold sensitive elements without risking surface damage. With a jaw travel of 500 µm and interchangeable interfaces, the mechanism adapts to various component geometries, streamlining integration into existing pick-and-place workflows and optical inspection lines.
