Volkswagen maintained its position at number one with $363 billion in revenue, even as its primary rival Shell saw a 5% decline in earnings. Across the rankings, the collective revenue of the 500 largest firms grew by 4%, representing roughly half of the region's GDP. Profits rebounded by 3% to slightly over $1 trillion, following a sharp 5% contraction in the previous cycle. Companies tightened internal operations, cutting total headcount by 1% to 34.6 million, which helped boost revenue per employee by 5%.
Financial services remains the most potent sector, commanding 24% of total revenue and 40% of all profits. While the list continues to be dominated by energy, automotive, and banking interests, leadership demographics are slowly shifting. The 2026 ranking features 43 female CEOs, the highest count since the list's 2023 inception. Despite this growth, women currently lead only 8.6% of the listed firms—a figure that trails the 11% representation found in the U.S. Fortune 500. BP, led by Meg O'Neill, stands as the only female-led company within the top ten.
