Elsevier Expands LeapSpace AI with Massive Scientific Database

With 23 million full-text articles and 2.6 billion cited references now integrated into its platform, Elsevier is attempting to reshape how researchers navigate scientific literature. The company is positioning LeapSpace as a research-grade workspace, aiming to bridge the trust gap between generative AI capabilities and academic rigor.

The expansion brings the platform’s underlying data to 56% of all recent global research citations, fueled by new partnerships with the BMJ Group, JAMA Network, Rockefeller University Press, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. This cross-publisher foundation allows users to generate study protocols and prepare manuscripts using content from over 1,500 scholarly organizations.

To counter the industry-wide skepticism—where only 22% of researchers report trusting AI tools—Elsevier has launched an independent Advisory Board. Chaired by Carleton University’s Jörg-Rüdiger Sack, the panel oversees algorithmic transparency and publisher-neutral content rankings. The board includes experts from RWTH Aachen University, Zhejiang University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, tasked with ensuring that the tool remains grounded in verifiable scientific evidence rather than opaque model generation.
