Quest Software Targets Rogue AI Agents in Identity Security Push

With identity-related threats accounting for 90% of cyber incidents, Quest Software is expanding its security platform to govern the rise of autonomous AI agents. The Austin-based firm aims to bridge the gap left by legacy systems that struggle to manage the rapid proliferation of non-human digital identities.

The platform expansion aligns with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, specifically addressing the risks posed by AI agents that operate at machine speed. According to Quest CEO Tim Page, incidents involving OpenAI and Hugging Face served as a catalyst, proving that legacy endpoint detection and SIEM tools are ill-equipped to handle the identity layer. Quest positions its technology as a control plane for Microsoft Active Directory and Entra ID, capable of isolating compromised agents before they trigger widespread breaches.

Quest is introducing five core capabilities to manage this landscape. These include Identity Insights, which utilizes technology from the June 2026 Anetac acquisition to map access paths, and Agentic AI Defense, which autonomously isolates threats in real time. The company also launched Secure Replay—a tool currently in private preview that uses AI to distinguish between malicious and legitimate activity during recovery—and Quest Guardian Managed Recovery Services for human-led incident response. These tools address a critical market vulnerability: Quest’s 2026 State of ITDR study revealed that over 75% of organizations currently lack a tested recovery plan. By integrating these defenses, the company claims it can improve recovery times by up to 90% compared to traditional backup methods.
