The industry is gaining momentum as countries prioritize energy security and the diversification of renewable portfolios. Unlike wind or solar, tidal power offers a distinct advantage: the predictability of lunar cycles. This reliability makes it an increasingly attractive component for island grids, remote communities, and hybrid renewable systems. Europe currently leads this expansion, bolstered by established marine research capabilities and robust government funding mechanisms such as the UK’s Contracts for Difference program.
Technological progress in tidal stream turbines and barrage designs is lowering costs and improving feasibility. While the market remains fragmented, investment is flowing into pre-commercial tidal farms and manufacturing capacity. Major players like Orbital Marine Power, Nova Innovation, and Minesto are moving beyond R&D, securing capital from both private ventures and public grants to scale their operations. As these projects move toward multi-megawatt arrays, the revenue landscape is diversifying to include comprehensive service agreements, installation, and long-term maintenance, signaling a maturing industrial ecosystem.
