The project consists of 9,222 modules spread across three floating islands, marking it as the largest system of its kind in the state and one of the five largest nationwide. While roughly a third of Ohio’s counties have moved to restrict utility-scale solar development on land since 2021, Monroeville opted to maximize its existing infrastructure. The reservoir now serves a dual purpose, providing water storage and generating electricity for the village distribution grid.

This installation complements a 4-megawatt ground-mounted array operational since 2017, giving the village one of the highest solar concentrations per capita in Ohio. Stetson Tchividjian, managing director of D3Energy, credited the success to the village’s leadership, specifically noting the role of retired administrator Tom Gray in driving the project to completion. Developed alongside Gardner Capital and Appalachian Renewable Power, the site represents a growing trend in the Midwest, where municipalities are increasingly turning to underutilized water surfaces to meet energy goals.
