A 1.2% jump in American retail sales for August—far outpacing the 0.8% consensus—has injected fresh momentum into the precious metals market. The surge in consumer activity, reported by the U.S. Commerce Department, pushed spot gold prices to a session high of $4,353.78 shortly after the data release.

The report highlights a robust appetite for goods, with core retail sales, which exclude volatile vehicle transactions, climbing 1.4%. This figure significantly outperformed the expected 0.5% gain, marking a sharp recovery from the downwardly revised 0.2% decline observed in July. On an annual basis, retail sales expanded by 6.0%, comfortably clearing the 4.7% growth predicted by economists.

Following the announcement, gold maintained a solid upward trajectory, last trading at $4,340.98, representing a 1.10% increase for the session. This broad-based strength in consumer spending follows a turbulent July, where headline sales had previously contracted by 0.6%.
