Retirement Coaches Link Vision Health to Personal Independence

Nearly two-thirds of retirement coaches report that clients are scaling back social activities and daily routines due to worsening eyesight. A new survey from the Retirement Coaches Association reveals that 96% of professionals believe poor vision poses a significant threat to the quality of life and autonomy of retirees.

The findings arrive as Medicare Open Enrollment prompts a shift in how retirees evaluate their health benefits. Many seniors remain unaware that original Medicare typically excludes routine eye exams, eyeglasses, and contact lenses, often leaving them to face unexpected out-of-pocket costs. With average eye exams costing approximately $214 without insurance, these expenses frequently force retirees to choose between paying significant premiums or delaying necessary medical care entirely.

Robert Laura, founder of the Retirement Coaches Association, emphasizes that vision serves as a critical link to the routines and relationships that provide meaning in retirement. Experts argue that integrating eye care into broader retirement-readiness discussions is as vital as financial planning. As retirees navigate coverage gaps, options like supplemental VSP Individual Vision Plans are increasingly positioned as a way to mitigate the risk of forced lifestyle changes caused by vision-related constraints.
