This sensory processing challenge acts as an independent contributor to irritability, alongside established factors like PTSD and chronic pain.

Lead investigator Jeffrey Hebert of the CU Anschutz School of Medicine notes that these symptoms create a feedback loop of emotional overload. Because the brain must exert significant effort to function in crowded or social spaces, patients often face a decline in social and professional stability. The data suggests that clinical care must shift away from treating behavioral issues in isolation, instead adopting an integrated approach that addresses physical pain and auditory processing alongside traditional mental health support.
