Nick Rugg has been named Head of Financial Institutions & Fintech – PFR & Cyber at Markel’s London-based specialty insurance division, effective immediately. Rugg brings two decades of underwriting experience to the position, having joined Markel in 2014. Previously serving as Head of Fintech and Investment Management Insurance, he will now manage a broader portfolio encompassing investment managers, traditional financial institutions, and offshore entities. His appointment follows the recent promotion of Bhavik Desai to Managing Director of PFR & Cyber, marking another shift in the company’s leadership structure.

Reflecting on the evolution of the sector, Rugg noted that fintech has transitioned from a niche segment to a cornerstone of the financial services market. He intends to leverage Markel’s early entry into this space to refine product offerings that address the converging nature of modern financial risks. Desai emphasized that Rugg’s track record—particularly in developing blended cyber and liability coverage—makes him well-suited to drive the division’s next phase of growth. Before his tenure at Markel, Rugg held an underwriting role at Arch Europe.
