France Launches DETECSEPS Project to Accelerate Sepsis Detection

A new government-funded consortium in France is deploying a multi-stage diagnostic strategy to identify sepsis in emergency departments, aiming to improve patient outcomes. The project, known as DETECSEPS, integrates clinical scoring with VolitionRx's Nu.Q® NETs biomarker to distinguish high-risk patients from those who can be safely discharged.

The initiative brings together the IHU Sepsis, the AP-HP hospital system, Hospices Civils de Lyon, and industrial partners IDS France and VolitionRx. With €6.3 million in funding, the team plans to evaluate the diagnostic approach across 1,000 patients in real-world clinical settings. The goal is to provide rapid, accurate triage for individuals arriving with suspected infections, potentially reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and easing the burden on emergency services.

The diagnostic workflow combines the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) 2 with Volition’s blood biomarker, Nu.Q® NETs H3.1, which quantifies NETosis—an immune mechanism associated with the disease. The IDS i10 automated analyzer provides the technical infrastructure to integrate these tests into routine hospital workflows. If successful, the program could establish a new standard for early intervention, addressing a global pathology that claims millions of lives annually.
