Steel Dynamics Projects Strong Q3 Earnings Growth

Steel Dynamics expects third-quarter 2026 earnings between $5.34 and $5.38 per diluted share, a significant jump from the $3.69 reported in the previous quarter. The surge is driven by expanding metal margins and record shipment volumes across the company’s core steel operations as market demand remains robust.

The company’s steel division continues to capitalize on high order activity, particularly within the energy, automotive, and non-residential construction sectors. Management attributes this performance to favorable pricing conditions and lower scrap costs, which have effectively bolstered profitability. Meanwhile, the steel fabrication segment is seeing a similar upward trend, with a backlog nearly 50 percent higher than year-ago levels, extending through early 2027.

Diversification efforts are also gaining traction. The aluminum unit is showing improved results as the company ramps up its flat-rolled products mill in Columbus, Mississippi. With all three cold mills now operational and the first continuous annealing line preparing for commercial shipments, the company is positioning itself for sustained growth. While metals recycling operations are expected to dip slightly due to lower spreads, the overall financial outlook remains positive. During the third quarter, the company repurchased $261 million of its common stock, signaling confidence in its current trajectory before the official earnings call scheduled for October 19, 2026.
