The move follows Buffett’s retirement as chief executive at the close of 2025. He credited current CEO Greg Abel’s performance for the decision, noting that Abel’s leadership has exceeded his already high expectations. Since taking the helm, Abel has steered significant capital deployments, including a $10 billion stake in Alphabet and the $6.8 billion purchase of home builder Taylor Morrison.
Howard Buffett, a director at the company since 1993, assumes the chairmanship after what his father described as a longer apprenticeship than his own. Warren Buffett, who took control of the struggling textile firm in 1965 and transformed it into a near-trillion-dollar entity, acknowledged the necessity of the change. Regarding his departure from the top post, he remarked, "Father Time always wins," while expressing absolute confidence in the firm's future trajectory under the current management team.
