Kunshan Lantern Festival Deepens Cross-Strait Cultural Ties

Under the glow of elaborate displays, the 2026 Cross-Strait Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival opened in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, this week. The event serves as a bridge for cultural exchange, drawing participants from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to celebrate shared traditions through art, performance, and modern multimedia experiences.

The festivities, centered at Huiju Square and Zhouzhuang, highlight a blend of heritage and technology. Attendees can engage with AI-powered installations alongside traditional lantern crafts that incorporate Taiwan-inspired motifs. The opening ceremony honored winners of the seventh Kunshan Mazu Cup Youth Lantern Design Competition and featured the debut of the micro-drama Crossing the Sea, a narrative focused on the enduring emotional bonds between families across the Strait.

Running concurrently, the closing ceremony of the sixth Cross-Strait Youth Culture Month marked the end of a two-month program that hosted nearly 3,500 young Taiwanese participants across 70 diverse events. Kunshan, a primary hub for investment from Taiwan, has utilized this annual festival since 2013 to reinforce its role as a focal point for economic and social interaction. By integrating intangible cultural heritage with contemporary interactive displays, the festival continues to function as a signature platform for regional connection.
