JA Tests P-HJT Solar Modules in Low-Earth Orbit

A Kuaizhou-11 rocket carried JA’s proprietary P-type heterojunction solar modules into orbit on September 17, marking the company’s first attempt to test terrestrial photovoltaic technology in the harsh environment of space. Launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, the mission seeks to validate crystalline silicon performance outside Earth’s atmosphere.

Dr. Ouyang Zi, Chief Technology Officer at JA, views the deployment as a strategic shift to lower the cost of space-based power systems. By subjecting the modules to intense radiation and rapid temperature fluctuations, engineers intend to compare real-world degradation against ground-based simulations. This data will determine if mature silicon technology can serve as a viable, cost-effective alternative to traditional gallium arsenide arrays used in current satellite infrastructure.

Successful validation could eventually support high-growth sectors such as satellite internet, remote sensing, and orbital computing. Despite the technical milestone, the company remains cautious regarding the immediate outlook. The project is currently in an early exploratory phase with no existing commercial orders, meaning the initiative has no material impact on the firm’s current financial standing. JA plans to use the mission to refine its manufacturing capabilities for future space-ready energy solutions.
