The investment targets the company’s facilities in Brøndby and Norcross, Georgia, reflecting a strategic shift to accommodate the rapid growth of AI infrastructure and cloud computing. Because optical fiber is typically procured a year ahead of actual cable deployment, Lightera is scaling now to meet projected needs for the end of the decade. Chief Executive Officer Holly Hulse noted that the project is designed to deliver both increased volume and the next generation of optical technologies.

Beyond current capacity, the expansion serves as a foundation for the commercialization of multicore fiber, with initial deployments anticipated between 2029 and 2030. This transition is intended to provide a significant boost in transmission capacity for undersea networks. As part of the Furukawa Electric Group, Lightera maintains these sites as its primary global hubs for producing high-performance fiber used in the world’s most demanding communications infrastructure.
