Private Sector Hiring Accelerates to 20,000 Weekly Pace

U.S. private employers added an average of 20,000 jobs per week for the period ending September 5, 2026, marking the third consecutive week of growth acceleration. The data, provided by the NER Pulse, reflects a steady climb from the 10,000-job weekly average recorded in mid-August.

This latest figure represents a significant uptick from previous weeks, where hiring momentum had fluctuated between 9,500 and 16,750 positions. The NER Pulse, a high-frequency tracking tool produced by ADP Research in collaboration with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, utilizes a four-week moving average to gauge real-time labor market shifts. By applying seasonal adjustments and a two-week reporting lag, the report aims to provide a clearer picture of workforce trends than raw weekly snapshots.

While these estimates are subject to revision as additional payroll data is processed, the current trajectory suggests a tightening labor market heading into the final quarter of the year. The next update from the research team is scheduled for release on October 6, 2026.
