Xynova Hits Unicorn Status by Solving the Robotic Hand Bottleneck

Robotics developers are currently stalled at the threshold of commercialization, largely due to a persistent shortage of high-performance dexterous hands. Xynova, a two-year-old Hangzhou-based startup, aims to break this deadlock by integrating full-stack hardware and software production to bridge the gap between lab prototypes and real-world deployment.

The company has moved quickly, achieving unicorn status with RMB 1.5 billion in funding from major players like CATL, Xiaomi, JD.com, and Meituan. Rather than relying on third-party components, Xynova manufactures its own motors, reducers, and electronic controls. This vertical integration allows them to maintain control over the mechanical architecture and sensing systems necessary for high-degree-of-freedom (DoF) manipulation.

Xynova’s strategy relies on a dual-product portfolio designed for distinct market needs. The Flex 2, a 23-DoF hybrid-drive hand, targets industrial and consumer applications where durability and load capacity are paramount. Conversely, the Prima 1—a 22-DoF direct-drive model—is built for research institutions requiring the high force transparency needed for AI data collection and algorithm training. By cycling data from research models into industrial field tests, the company creates a feedback loop intended to accelerate product iteration.

To support global demand, the firm has opened a 5,400-square-meter manufacturing facility in Hangzhou. With its technology already showcased at ICRA in Vienna and the World Robot Conference in Beijing, Xynova is preparing to present its hardware to the North American market at IROS 2026 in Pittsburgh. The company’s trajectory highlights a broader shift in the embodied AI sector: the transition from theoretical research platforms to the mass production of specialized physical components.
