The company, backed by CoreWeave and AMD Ventures, recently secured a recruit from Meta by offering a $900,000 package—comprising a $600,000 base salary and $300,000 in bonuses. This structure effectively matches the engineer's previous total compensation with salary alone, while providing a significant cash premium. CHAI typically structures its offers as 75% base salary and 25% bonuses, with sign-on and retention incentives replacing traditional performance-based equity refreshers.
Operating with a lean team of 15–20 employees, CHAI reports an annualized revenue run-rate of $120 million and profitability when excluding sales and marketing costs. Founder and CEO William Beauchamp frames the move as a way to provide financial clarity for recruits who want to avoid the volatility of front-loaded stock vesting common in big tech. While the model prioritizes cash, engineers still retain the option to exchange portions of their salary for stock options to capture long-term upside. With over one million daily users, the startup is leveraging this high-cash model to compete directly with legacy tech giants for infrastructure and conversational AI talent.
