Stanford-Led Study Validates Urine-Based RNA Platform for Bladder Cancer

A new study published in Nature Medicine demonstrates that a non-invasive urine test can move beyond simple cancer detection to predict how specific tumors will respond to immunotherapy. By analyzing cell-free RNA, researchers identified molecular signatures that distinguish tumor aggressiveness and residual disease without requiring surgical tissue biopsies.

The research, conducted by teams from the Stanford Cancer Institute and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, utilized Resero Bio’s proprietary uRARE-seq platform to analyze 683 urine samples. The findings suggest that the technology can successfully discriminate between low-grade and high-grade bladder tumors, as well as identify patients likely to achieve a complete molecular response to BCG immunotherapy before treatment even commences.

Beyond detection, the platform successfully tracked molecular residual disease following surgery, flagging patients at higher risk of recurrence. According to Resero Bio CEO Monica Nesselbush, the ability to read gene expression programs directly from urine provides a more comprehensive view of tumor biology than previous liquid biopsy methods. While the current study focuses on bladder cancer, the company has generated proof-of-concept data across ten solid tumor types, including preliminary evidence for renal cell carcinoma and prostate adenocarcinoma applications.
