Written by Michigan native M.M. Haney and directed by Lee Sunday Evans, the play follows a journalist who returns home to expose a cover-up of water contamination. While fictional, the narrative mirrors the systemic failures experienced in cities like Flint, Newark, and Pittsburgh. Director Lee Sunday Evans notes that the play’s core questions—regarding who holds the power in democratic decision-making—resonate far beyond the stage as communities across the Midwest continue to grapple with PFAS, lead, and water shutoffs.
The tour concludes with a series of discussions featuring local organizers and journalists. In Kalamazoo, Matt Schuster of Public Media Network and reporter Kristen Aguirre will explore the role of investigative journalism, followed by a session with Sandy Wynn of the Great Lakes PFAS Action Network. The Detroit leg will host activists from Flint Rising and the Detroit People's Water Board Coalition, including Melissa Mays, Nayyirah Shariff, and Sylvia Orduño. These sessions aim to connect the play’s themes of accountability and corporate negligence directly to the ongoing grassroots fights for clean, affordable, and publicly controlled water.
