Battery applications currently command approximately 80 percent of global lithium consumption, cementing lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide as the industry's most critical commodities. While the Asia Pacific region maintains its dominance through China’s manufacturing scale and rising demand in Japan and South Korea, the supply chain is shifting toward a global race for resource security. Major industry players are increasingly prioritizing direct lithium extraction technologies and large-scale investments in Argentina and Chile to stabilize high-purity supply lines.

Recent corporate maneuvers underscore this competitive intensity. Eramet has committed $350 million to expand production in Argentina, while the SQM-Codelco partnership is advancing a $3 billion project in the Atacama region. Simultaneously, Chinese production capacity received a boost following the restart of CATL’s Jianxiawo mine. As stationary energy storage systems join electric vehicles as primary demand drivers, the market is pivoting from basic extraction toward integrated, high-value processing to meet the stringent requirements of next-generation energy technologies.
