Vision To Learn Hits Milestone of 300,000 Glasses Provided in California

At 24th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles, education leaders and nonprofit organizers gathered this week to celebrate a significant achievement: 300,000 California students have now received free prescription eyewear through Vision To Learn, an initiative aimed at removing vision-related barriers to academic success.

The event, attended by founder Austin Beutner and California Teachers Association President David Goldberg, also served as the launchpad for a new expansion effort targeting Los Angeles Unified’s Community Schools. The program focuses on providing mobile eye care directly to students in low-income neighborhoods, where roughly 90% of those served by the nonprofit live in poverty.

Research from Johns Hopkins University supports the effort, indicating that students receiving glasses through this program saw academic gains equivalent to two to four months of additional learning. For students struggling academically or those with learning disabilities, that improvement climbed as high as six months. By bringing licensed eye care professionals directly to campus, the organization bypasses traditional obstacles such as transportation or lack of insurance that often prevent children from receiving necessary vision screenings and corrective lenses.
