Greenbrier Rebuts UTLX Trade Petition Over Tank Car Manufacturing

The Greenbrier Companies is pushing back against a trade petition from UTLX Manufacturing, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, which seeks to impose antidumping and countervailing duties on railway tank cars. Greenbrier maintains the allegations misrepresent its domestic manufacturing footprint and its ongoing commitment to U.S.-based production operations.

Greenbrier officials stated that the petition lacks both legal and factual merit, specifically rejecting claims that the company has abandoned its American workforce. The manufacturer pointed to its facility in Marmaduke, Arkansas, as proof of its continued domestic output, noting that the petition itself acknowledges Greenbrier’s 2025 U.S. production levels.

Since 2019, Greenbrier has directed over $500 million into its Arkansas operations, supporting a workforce that spans welders, engineers, and machinists. The company currently employs more than 2,000 people across 11 states. Addressing concerns regarding pricing, the firm emphasized that its products compete on quality and safety rather than subsidies, noting that its tank cars utilize steel sourced from U.S. foundries. Greenbrier plans to defend its position before the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission, arguing that trade remedies should be grounded in documented reality rather than competitor speculation.
