US Naval Blockade Strands 50 Iranian Tankers in Persian Gulf

Fifty tankers laden with crude oil, petroleum products, and LPG remain anchored along the Iranian coastline as a strict U.S. naval blockade chokes the country’s maritime trade. Reinstated in mid-July outside the Strait of Hormuz, the operation aims to force Tehran’s oil exports to zero and secure leverage in diplomatic negotiations.

The blockade has effectively paralyzed Iran's primary export terminal at Kharg Island, where 16 vessels currently sit idle. According to data from United Against Nuclear Iran, 11 of these ships are anchored to the east, with five more stationed to the south. Since the enforcement began on July 14, the organization has tracked 39 separate loading attempts, yet none have successfully cleared the restricted waters to reach international markets.

While Tehran continues to project defiance, the economic toll is mounting. Vessel-tracking services indicate a severe contraction in output, with crude loadings plummeting from 250,000 barrels per day in August to zero by September. Empty Iranian-flagged tankers are now lingering at anchorages across the Indo-Pacific, unwilling to return home as the U.S.-led maritime perimeter holds firm.
