Ryan Zofay on Breaking the Founder Bottleneck

Most business owners blame their growth plateaus on faulty strategy or market conditions, but Ryan Zofay argues the true culprit is a lack of influence. On October 10–11, the nine-figure founder will host the Speak to Scale event in Deerfield Beach to address why leadership, not tactics, stalls scaling.

Zofay contends that once a business model is proven, the owner often becomes the primary obstacle to further expansion. He categorizes this as a failure of influence rather than technical execution. For Zofay, when deals fail at the closing stage or teams struggle to perform independently, the issue lies in the owner’s inability to maintain a clear communication frame. He describes the transition from a hands-on owner to a true CEO as a shift in how one manages belief, feeling, and necessity within a team.

Drawing from his own history—which includes overcoming a teenage overdose and building the behavioral health company We Level Up—Zofay admits he once struggled with these same traps. He previously filled roles based on a desire to be liked rather than strategic necessity, which nearly stifled his own firm's growth. During the two-day event, attendees will work on positioning statements and leadership frameworks designed to help them exit the day-to-day operations. The program targets owners generating at least $250,000 in annual revenue who are looking to move beyond being the central bottleneck of their companies.
