Nursing student secures future through new workforce pipeline

At 12 years old, Icencia Noël lay in a hospital bed, terrified by a 104-degree fever. A nurse named Debbie calmed her, turning a traumatic medical episode into a career calling. Fourteen years later, that same desire to provide comfort has landed Noël a job at UNC Health Wayne before she even graduates.

Noël, currently a student at the Arizona College of Nursing’s Hartford campus, is one of the first beneficiaries of a partnership between the college and Scholars Network. The initiative, launched in April 2026, aims to solve the national nursing shortage by linking students directly to health systems. For Noël, the agreement guarantees her a position in North Carolina, sweetened by $40,000 in education loan repayment assistance.

This pipeline seeks to stabilize a workforce plagued by high turnover and crushing student debt. By embedding recruitment directly into the academic experience, the program allows health systems to secure talent long before graduation. For rural hospitals like UNC Health Wayne, the model offers a reprieve from the rising costs of contract labor and onboarding. Dr. Jessie Tucker, the facility's CEO, views the program as a vital tool for ensuring long-term institutional health.

For students, the partnership provides a clear path to professional stability. Yet, for Noël, the transition is rooted in the philosophy she witnessed as a child: the patient matters more than the diagnosis. As she prepares for a future as a neonatal intensive care nurse, she remains focused on the standard set by her own childhood nurse. Her goal is not just clinical proficiency, but the ability to make patients feel seen and safe during their most vulnerable moments.
