Michael R. Wysong Named New NACDS President and CEO

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores has tapped Michael R. Wysong to lead the organization starting December 1, 2026. Currently the CEO of CARE Pharmacies, Wysong will replace the retiring Steven C. Anderson, who departs at the end of the year after two decades at the helm of the trade group.

The Board of Directors selected Wysong following a nationwide search, aiming to maintain the momentum of its member-driven strategic framework. His appointment arrives as the association focuses on two primary objectives: shaping the future of pharmacy practice and maximizing return on investment for its retail and supplier members. Wysong is a familiar face within the organization, having served as its chair from 2023 to 2024 and maintaining a consistent presence on its executive committee.

During his tenure at CARE Pharmacies since 2010, Wysong expanded the network to over 200 locations across 27 states, pushing annual sales toward the $2 billion mark. Supporters point to his extensive background in the supply chain and federal advocacy as key assets for navigating the current economic challenges facing retail health. NACDS Chair David B. Warner noted that the board sought a leader capable of bridging the gap between independent practice and national policy, emphasizing that Wysong understands the industry from both the retailer and supplier perspectives.

Anderson, who oversaw a period of significant growth and financial stabilization for the association, expressed full confidence in the transition. As the industry faces shifting demands in care delivery and rising healthcare costs, the association intends to lean on Wysong’s experience to advocate for the expanded role of pharmacies as primary healthcare destinations.
