Common Hydrogel Cooling Products Linked to Fatal Pet Poisonings

A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association has identified a lethal danger hiding in household cooling products. Migraine caps, eye masks, and pet beds containing polyacrylamide hydrogel are being linked to severe neurological distress and death in dogs due to unexpectedly high levels of residual acrylamide.

ASPCA Poison Control reports weekly cases of toxicosis resulting from the ingestion of these gel-based items. While polyacrylamide is generally considered safe, researchers found that consumer products often contain massive concentrations of free acrylamide. Testing revealed levels between 12,900 and 51,800 ppm—up to 86 times higher than anticipated safety thresholds and thousands of times greater than those found in medical-grade devices.

Dr. Colette Wegenast, senior director of quality assurance at ASPCA Poison Control, notes that the risk spans numerous brands currently on the market. Dogs suffering from exposure exhibit symptoms ranging from vomiting and tremors to seizures and death. Because no specific antidote for acrylamide exists, treatment remains limited to supportive care and symptom management. Experts urge owners to keep all human-use cooling wraps out of reach and to strictly supervise pets using cooling pads, particularly if the animal has a history of chewing household objects.
