Linux Foundation Launches OpenGrid to Modernize Global Power Planning

The Linux Foundation has unveiled OpenGrid, an open-source initiative designed to create a unified digital infrastructure for global power grid planning. By establishing shared interoperability standards and data hubs, the project aims to accelerate energy infrastructure deployment and resolve the massive bottlenecks currently plaguing electricity connection queues worldwide.

The initiative addresses a critical disparity in energy development: while more than 2,500 gigawatts of generation and storage projects currently sit in connection queues, planning remains hindered by fragmented data and incompatible software. OpenGrid does not intend to replace existing commercial or open-source tools. Instead, it creates a neutral integration layer, including standardized schemas, APIs, and a centralized Data Hub for model-ready datasets.

This architecture allows planners to maintain their current workflows while gaining the ability to move data seamlessly between platforms. A primary component, the OpenGrid Translator, is scheduled for release in 2027 to facilitate this exchange. With annual grid investment requirements expected to exceed $600 billion by 2030, the project seeks to provide developing markets—which will account for nearly 80% of future electricity demand growth—with the same high-quality modeling capabilities available to mature economies. Supported by partners including Google.org and Breakthrough Energy GRIDS, the initiative prioritizes transparency and neutral governance to ensure that infrastructure decisions can be inspected and verified by regulators and communities alike.
