Brigham and Women’s Nurses Set Final Talks Before Indefinite Strike

With an open-ended strike looming on October 14, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital MNA Bargaining Committee will meet with management on October 8. The session serves as a final effort to secure a contract for 4,000 nurses, following a 93% authorization vote that signals deep dissatisfaction within the staff.

The upcoming negotiations arrive after more than a year of bargaining and a series of unresolved labor disputes. Kelly Morgan, a labor and delivery nurse and chair of the committee, stated that the team remains focused on achieving professional respect and maintaining world-class patient care standards. The nurses issued a formal 10-day strike notice on October 2, framing the action as an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike to provide workers with greater legal protections.

Nurses have filed multiple grievances against the hospital, including allegations of illegal retaliation for participation in previous strikes, unauthorized changes to job descriptions, and the suppression of union-related insignia. These tensions reached a boiling point on September 24, when the staff voted 2,986 to 215 in favor of the walkout. The decision was underscored by state data identifying Mass General Brigham as the most profitable hospital system in Massachusetts, reporting a $2.3 billion margin. If a settlement is not reached during the October 8 meeting, the strike will proceed indefinitely.
