263 Runners Tackle Chicago Marathon for Suicide Prevention

On October 11, the streets of Chicago will host 263 athletes running not just for personal records, but to fuel the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. As part of the "Race for Hope" team, these participants aim to turn 26.2 miles of endurance into nearly $1 million for mental health research and advocacy.

Since the team first joined the Chicago Marathon in 2010, over 1,800 runners have raised approximately $4.6 million. Each participant wears a custom jersey displaying their personal motivation on the back—often a tribute to a lost loved one or a reflection on their own mental health journey. This year, the team seeks to build on that legacy by funding programs designed to reach those struggling with untreated conditions.

Steve Moore, a team co-captain and former Illinois Chapter board member, noted that the months of training are matched by the effort to engage thousands of donors in conversations about mental health. Beyond the marathon course, the foundation continues to push for systemic change, including a recently announced intent to merge with The Jed Foundation to expand their reach in youth suicide prevention. Those seeking immediate support can connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.
