Ginkgo Bioworks Integrates Araceli’s Endeavor Into Autonomous Lab

Ginkgo Bioworks is expanding the capabilities of its autonomous laboratory, Nebula, by integrating the Endeavor high-content imaging system from Araceli Biosciences. The collaboration aims to accelerate drug discovery by providing high-speed cellular data generation and real-time analysis within Ginkgo’s modular, robotically controlled research environment.

The Endeavor system, recognized for its ability to image a 1536-well plate in under four minutes, will operate continuously within Nebula’s Reconfigurable Automation Carts. By utilizing Araceli’s ClaireRT software, the instrument performs immediate analysis during the imaging process. This allows the system to identify anomalies in real time, alerting operators or pausing experiments if data falls outside specified parameters. The integration is designed to produce the large, curated datasets essential for training and validating artificial intelligence models used in pharmaceutical development.

Nebula currently functions as an autonomous hub where robotic arms and automated sample transport replace manual labor. With over 100 modular units running 24/7, the facility aims to maximize productivity by maintaining a compact footprint compared to traditional lab settings. According to Ginkgo CEO Jason Kelly, the addition of best-in-class tools like the Endeavor allows researchers to connect disparate instruments into a unified software ecosystem. Matt Beaudet, President and CEO of Araceli Biosciences, noted that the shift toward labs that can interpret biological data as it is generated represents a fundamental change in how drug discovery research is conducted.
