Austin joined the organization in 2017 and brings extensive experience in collaborating with state education agencies across regions including Georgia, Indiana, and Texas. Her work focuses on utilizing longitudinal data to address systemic challenges, ranging from pandemic-era recovery to teacher shortages. Julie Kochanek, chief program officer at AIR, noted that Austin’s appointment reinforces the center's commitment to rigorous methodology and the practical application of empirical research for policymakers.
Since its inception in 2006, the center has functioned as a hub for quantitative evidence, partnering with government entities and advocacy groups to influence national education strategies. Austin holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Notre Dame and has contributed to numerous academic publications, including the American Educational Research Journal. In her new capacity, she aims to maintain the center’s status as an independent, objective voice as it tackles evolving K-12 policy questions.
