Counselors Report Growing Student Skepticism Toward College Value

Seventy-eight percent of high school counselors identify tuition costs as the primary barrier to higher education, according to a 2026 report from Encoura. With nearly half of students questioning the necessity of a degree, counselors are struggling to manage complex planning demands while resources remain thin.

The report, which surveyed 1,600 counselors, reveals a significant shift in student priorities. Beyond financial concerns, 75% of counselors noted that students feel ill-equipped to navigate postsecondary choices. This uncertainty is driving a surge in interest toward alternative routes, with 71% of counselors reporting increased curiosity about trade and vocational programs, while 68% see more students gravitating toward two-year community college pathways.

To bridge this gap, counselors are calling for a fundamental change in how higher education institutions approach recruitment. Rather than high-volume outreach, professionals are seeking dedicated points of contact and streamlined communication, with 83% favoring personalized email. As colleges face pressure to justify their value proposition, the data suggests that institutions must pivot from traditional marketing to acting as transparent, year-round partners in the student decision-making process.
