This acquisition follows the Federal Communications Commission’s recent authorization for SpaceX to launch 15,000 satellites optimized for global 2 GHz operations. The newly acquired 800 MHz band, formerly held by T-Mobile, serves as a critical bridge to enhance mobile connectivity reach. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has explicitly targeted the subscriber bases of T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon, betting that Starlink’s infrastructure will outperform incumbent terrestrial networks.
Market reaction to the expansion was swift. Shares of AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile dropped between 7.2% and 7.9% in after-hours trading following the announcement. While the financial terms of the Grain Management deal remain undisclosed, the transaction underscores the scale of SpaceX's ambition. By deploying both satellite and terrestrial spectrum, Starlink positions itself to offer a unique mobile service model that traditional carriers currently lack.
