MedStar Health Deploys Airbus H145 D3 for Regional Critical Care

A rare Airbus H145 D3 helicopter has joined the MedSTAR Transport fleet, marking a significant upgrade for emergency medical services across Washington, D.C., and Maryland. This high-performance aircraft introduces specialized capabilities for neonatal care and complex life-support systems, filling a niche requirement for the region’s most vulnerable patients.

The new rotorcraft distinguishes itself with a five-blade system that ensures a smoother flight for patients undergoing delicate procedures. With 1,000 pounds of additional payload capacity and a more spacious cabin, medical crews can now accommodate two stretchers simultaneously or deploy larger bedside teams for high-acuity missions. These technical improvements directly support the transport of patients requiring ECMO heart-lung systems and specialized neonatal equipment.

Founded in 1983, MedSTAR Transport manages approximately 5,000 patient moves annually. By integrating this advanced model into its existing network of air and ground ambulances, the program strengthens its capacity to handle both interfacility transfers and trauma-center responses. The aircraft’s enhanced fuel range and engine power provide the necessary performance to maintain these critical services even under challenging environmental conditions.
