The current energy environment has created a paradoxical market. While a Bloomberg gauge of 104 EV-linked companies remains sluggish, firms like Honda Motor Co. are thriving by betting on hybrids. After pivoting away from an aggressive all-electric strategy, Honda saw record quarterly operating profits of ¥530.8 billion, fueled by a surge in demand for fuel-efficient CR-V models. Similarly, ChargePoint Holdings Inc. saw its shares spike 70% in September after reporting a narrowing EBITDA loss, as drivers increasingly opted for home charging solutions to combat $4-a-gallon gas.
Infrastructure providers and niche markets also reveal the ripple effects of the oil shock. Eaton Corp. has become a defensive favorite, hitting record sales by supplying the electrical backbone for both data centers and high-power charging networks. Meanwhile, in Southeast Asia, VinFast Auto Ltd. is capturing a massive shift toward two-wheeled electrification, delivering over 286,000 e-scooters in a single quarter. Yet, volatility remains a constant for the sector. SolarEdge Technologies, despite strong European demand for battery storage, continues to see its valuation whipsawed by shifting residential solar incentives and missed earnings guidance, proving that even in a transition-heavy market, selectivity is the only path to safety.
