The Board of Governors selected the Times for its refusal to accept department-mandated talking points or restrictive escort policies within the Pentagon. Last December, the newspaper initiated a lawsuit against new rules that limited reporter access to unauthorized sources, a move that prompted a federal judge in March 2026 to strike down the restrictions as unconstitutional. Although the Pentagon has appealed that decision, the newspaper pursued further litigation in May regarding mandatory escorts for journalists, which remains currently tied up in appellate court proceedings.
Beyond its Pentagon disputes, the organization faced significant pressure from the Trump administration regarding source protection. In July, five Times journalists received subpoenas for their communications and records following a report on the presidential jet. The administration eventually withdrew the subpoenas after a judge signaled an intent to quash them. Accepting the honor on behalf of the staff, Washington Bureau Chief Richard Stevenson stated that the outlet remains committed to protecting its journalists against legal intimidation. The award will be formally presented during the Fourth Estate Award Gala in Washington, D.C., on November 12.
