Artiva Biotherapeutics Cuts 94% of Staff and Seeks Buyer After Drug Failure

A 23% plunge in premarket trading greeted Artiva Biotherapeutics on Tuesday after the San Diego biotech firm abandoned its lead development candidate, AlloNK. The decision to scrap the program followed clinical data indicating that the treatment’s response durability failed to reach the benchmarks necessary for a planned Phase 3 trial.

The company is now pivoting toward a complete strategic review, having engaged Leerink Partners to explore options that range from a full merger to total liquidation. This restructuring includes a massive reduction in headcount, with 94% of the current workforce being laid off as the business attempts to preserve remaining capital for shareholders.

As of September 30, the firm reported $319.1 million in cash, equivalents, and investments. Despite this liquidity, the market capitalization has withered to approximately $300 million. By halting all further development of AlloNK, the board is signaling that the clinical path forward is no longer viable, leaving the company’s future entirely dependent on the results of the ongoing sale process.
