Microsoft Earnings Preview: AI Infrastructure and Capex in Focus

When Microsoft reports its fiscal first-quarter earnings after Wednesday’s closing bell, investors will look past the expected revenue surge to the underlying costs of the company’s AI expansion. Analysts project net income of $35.11 billion, yet the true test lies in how Microsoft balances heavy capital expenditures against cloud demand.

Microsoft Earnings Preview: AI Infrastructure and Capex in Focus

Wall Street anticipates a strong performance, with revenue climbing to $90.62 billion from $77.67 billion a year ago. Adjusted earnings per share are forecasted to hit $4.71, up from $4.13. Much of this optimism centers on the Azure cloud business, where growth remains constrained by infrastructure availability rather than a lack of customer appetite. Morgan Stanley analysts suggest that improved data center capacity and efficiency gains will bolster these results, while increased usage of OpenAI models provides a competitive edge over rivals like Google and Amazon.

Beyond raw cloud performance, the firm’s ability to monetize AI across its entire software stack is under scrutiny. Truist analysts describe Microsoft as a resilient "picks and shovel" play, noting that the company’s differentiation now spans orchestration, data context, and application layers. However, the market remains wary of the mounting price tag for this technological buildout. Oppenheimer analysts identify fiscal 2027 capital expenditure requirements as a primary risk factor to watch. Despite these concerns, Microsoft maintains a financial buffer; its credit default spreads remain tighter and more stable than those of its peers, signaling a unique advantage in funding its massive AI ecosystem.
