TotalEnergies Profit Hits $9.1 Billion on Refining Surge

Surging oil and gas prices combined with historically high refining margins delivered a $9.1 billion third-quarter profit for TotalEnergies, effectively doubling the French supermajor’s earnings from the previous year and comfortably outpacing analyst expectations of $8.3 billion.

TotalEnergies Profit Hits $9.1 Billion on Refining Surge

The company’s integrated business model proved decisive as downstream operations hit record territory, contributing $4.1 billion in net operating income. CEO Patrick Pouyanné credited the performance to the firm’s geographic reach and a bull gas market, which allowed for a cash flow of $12.3 billion. By maximizing refinery throughput and securing diesel imports from the Middle East, the group bolstered European supply security while benefiting from favorable global price dynamics.

This trend of triple-digit growth mirrors broader industry patterns across Europe. Shell recently announced its strongest quarterly earnings since 2022 at $10.8 billion, while Norway’s Equinor reported its own figures tripled compared to the prior year. For TotalEnergies, the results represent a 51% increase over the second quarter, driven by a 10% rise in refining throughput and high-performing oil trading activities that remained consistent with previous quarters.
