Chevron Profits Triple as Refinery Margins Surge

Chevron’s third-quarter profit reached $9.9 billion, nearly tripling year-over-year as the company capitalized on massive gains in its refining business. While global fuel demand remained flat, the firm’s U.S. refineries operated at 98% capacity, generating record returns against a backdrop of constrained international supply and elevated crude prices.

Chevron Profits Triple as Refinery Margins Surge

The company’s downstream operations proved the primary engine of growth, reporting $4.93 billion in earnings—more than quadruple the figure from the same period last year. U.S. refining profits alone surged to $3.59 billion, rising from $638 million despite only a marginal increase in crude processing. This windfall stems largely from a global capacity crunch, with roughly 10% of fuel-making facilities sidelined by geopolitical instability in Russia and the Middle East.

Upstream performance also bolstered the balance sheet, with earnings climbing to $5.7 billion as Brent crude prices averaged $97 per barrel. Even as worldwide production dipped slightly to 3.98 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, the company’s cash position strengthened significantly. Chevron generated $12 billion in free cash flow, allowing for a $3.5 billion debt reduction and sustained $2.5 billion in share repurchases. Looking ahead, the energy giant is betting on expansion in Venezuela, where joint ventures are slated to receive $7 billion in investment over the next five years to potentially double regional production.
