Investors are pivoting toward the safety of government bonds, moving capital out of equities as the prospect of a Democratic-controlled Congress gains traction. Market participants anticipate that a legislative shift could impede major investment in artificial intelligence, particularly regarding the expansion of data centers, which emerged as a recurring flashpoint during recent electoral campaigns.
Sean Callow, a senior currency strategist at ITC Markets, identified this emerging "tech threat" as a defining theme for the coming weeks. Analysts expect tech-sensitive shares to face sustained pressure as the political landscape evolves. Andrew Canobi, director of fixed income at Franklin Templeton, described the initial market reaction as a classic flight to quality. According to Canobi, a Democratic majority would likely serve as a constraint on the growth policies previously championed by President Trump, specifically impacting the AI and natural resources sectors.
