South Korean Defense Equities Tumble on U.S. Election Shift

A Democratic sweep in the U.S. midterm elections sent shockwaves through Seoul’s markets, triggering a sharp sell-off in defense stocks as investors bet on a cooling of geopolitical tensions. The retreat mirrored overnight losses in American firms, signaling a potential pivot toward stricter defense-spending oversight in Washington.

LIG Defense&Aerospace bore the brunt of the volatility, plummeting 15% in its most significant daily drop in a year. The decline rippled across the sector, with Hanwha Aerospace sliding 7.5%, Hyundai Rotem shedding 5.8%, and Korea Aerospace Industries down 3.3%. This sector-wide retreat dragged the Kospi index down by 5.3% as markets recalibrated for a political landscape that may curb the aggressive military spending seen during the Trump administration.

Analysts remain divided on the long-term impact of the shift. Byron Callan of Capital Alpha Partners warned that a Democrat-controlled Congress could stall defense budget increases and heighten the risk of federal funding lapses. Conversely, S.Y. Yang of Eugene Investment & Securities dismissed fears of a structural downturn, noting that South Korean firms maintain limited revenue exposure to the U.S. domestic market. According to Yang, persistent demand for hardware in Europe and the Middle East will likely insulate local exporters from the immediate tremors of American electoral politics.
