Advantest Probes Ransomware Attack on Chip-Testing Network

Japanese semiconductor testing giant Advantest is investigating a ransomware attack that breached its corporate network, prompting the company to isolate systems and engage outside cybersecurity experts.

Advantest Probes Ransomware Attack on Chip-Testing Network

The company first detected unusual activity within its IT environment on Feb. 15. In response, Advantest activated emergency protocols and moved to contain the threat. Preliminary findings suggest an unauthorized actor accessed specific segments of the network to deploy ransomware, according to an official statement.

Assessing the Data Impact

Advantest is currently working to determine if the breach resulted in the theft of sensitive information. The company committed to notifying individuals directly if the investigation reveals that customer or employee data was compromised. Despite the disruption, the firm is prioritizing the reinforcement of its defensive infrastructure to prevent future incursions.

The news triggered a sharp reaction on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, where Advantest has been a top performer due to rising demand for AI-related hardware:

  • The company’s shares fell 2.1% on Thursday, erasing earlier session gains.
    • The stock had previously doubled in value over the course of last year.
  • Year-to-date, the manufacturer’s shares were up 37% as of Wednesday’s close.
